About Shaan Hurley
I started Between the Lines in 2003. I wanted a place to share the real side of working in design technology. The work. The people. The small discoveries that make the tough parts easier. The name came from that idea. The useful parts often sit in the space between the lines. The part that is not in the manual.
I spent many years at Autodesk and helped shape how customers connected with the product teams. I tested early ideas. I worked with design and engineering groups. I wrote about the work with an honest voice. That early version of the blog grew fast. It became a spot where people came to learn something new or to see what was possible with the tools in front of them. Over time the blog picked up a life of its own and a large community formed around it.
My work today still sits in that space. I help teams in AEC and manufacturing solve real problems with software, workflows, and data. I spend time with startups and companies involved in design & construction. I help companies see what is coming and what matters right now. Much of that thinking shows up here. Sometimes through a story from the field. Sometimes through a lesson from a past project. Often through a simple observation about the tools we use every day.
I live in Bend Oregon. I spend a lot of time outdoors. I fly drones. I photograph the places I explore. Many of those photos make their way onto the blog. They help break up the tech talk and remind me that good design always starts with seeing the world with clear eyes.
This blog is for people who build things. The builders. The engineers. The designers. The curious ones who want to understand how things work and how they could work better. If you enjoy straight talk, real examples, and a simple voice, you will feel at home here.
Two decades in, the goal has not changed. Share what I learn. Keep the writing clear and honest. Help people get better at the work they care about. And have some fun along the way.
If you have a question or a story worth sharing, reach out. That is how this place has always worked.
