Flying the Autodesk Octo-Copter in a very very very remote region of East Africa.

If you go to the middle of nowhere in East Africa, go North, and turn right, then drive another couple hours in the blazing heat, you will be where I am. Gonzalo Martinez and myself of Autodesk are capturing…

The Avengers Movie Visual Fx

I must be one of the few that did not run out to the movie theaters last weekend to see the new Avengers movie. The movie blew away box office records and at least 3 of my family has seen it but I was unfortunately buried under a long list of things to do before some upcoming overseas travel. After all the buzz about the movie from those that have seen it, I need to make it a priority to see the movie this week.

Behind the scenes it was a who's who of visual effects companies, many are also using Autodesk software to use the power of visual effects to compliment the storytelling and dazzle moviegoers retinas and release the flood of endorphins in the brain.

Flight Training This Week

This week I spent the beginning in San Francisco getting some formal training to be a safe and skilled Octo-Copter pilot. I am a designated tandem pilot for the Octo-Copter for some research projects and need to have my skills…

3D Print Your Autodesk Products as a DVD

Last week while working in the San Francisco Autodesk offices I ran across an interesting research project that is being conducted by a special team of combined operations and a 3D printing team.

In the past Autodesk had physical media for delivery of software like floppy disk, CD-ROM, DVD, and USB media. Then we had the instantly gratifying electronic downloads of the software, but that was electronic and nothing you could place on your shelf unless you waiting a week or more to receive the physical shipment from your friendly delivery man.

Many wanted instant software in a physical form and that customer request is at the core of this research.

Utah’s FIRST Robotics 2012 Competition

This past Thursday, Friday, and Saturday several high school student teams from around the Western United States converged on Salt Lake City and competed in the Utah's FIRST Robotics Competition regional competition.

Each team started designing in January for the Rebound Rumble challenge which involved several challenges where the robots must autonomously make some basketball baskets shots and then the wireless controlled manual portion gathering the balls and shooting them for points as well as some obstacles and cooperation challenges where one robot helps another over an obstacle. In between the events there is fun trivia and entertainment like music and dancing to keep the crowds energy going.

iPad 3 Madness

The new iPad known as the iPad (3rd generation) is now available for those that pre-ordered or waited in some sort of a line. So I found myself in a line at a Walmart at midnight and got my iPad 3rd gen tablet in the 32 Gb Wifi flavor. I don’t like waiting in lines for things especially gadgets but this was worth it and actually a fun experience making new friends in the line and then the creepy guy wearing a poor Halo Master Chief costume around the store. It was almost like a support group for iPad users “My name is Shaan and I am an iPad’aholic.”
