I am re-releasing the Drawing Tabs Bonus Tool. We have fixed some bugs identified in CER reports and recompiled the much beloved free Drawing Tabs MDITabs.ARX application for both 32bit and 64bit versions of AutoCAD 2010, AutoCAD 2009, and AutoCAD 2007/2008/2009. Yes AutoCAD 2009 and 2008 64bit version due to customer request. MDITabs allows you to see and quickly navigate open drawings in a series of tabs along the top of the drawing window. For those that installed the AutoCAD 2010 versions posted March 29 2009 this is the same released build no need to replace.
Your wish is our command!

AutoCAD 2010 2007/2008/2009 versions in one Zip archive file
Download AutoCAD MDITabs ARX
To install you simply place the appropriate ARX for your version of AutoCAD 2010 such as 32-bit or 64-bit in your support path. Now use the AutoCAD command APPLOAD to load it, and then add it to your start up suite so it loads each time you start AutoCAD 2010. Huge kudos to the many AutoCAD Team members that helped get this accomplished such as Kurt Chase, Mike Dickason, Misha Belilovskiy, Debashis Dhar, Elishba Joseph, Suresh Kumar, Ravi Pothineni, Eileen Sinnott, Kathy O'Connell, Karen Mason, Gagandeep Singh, and Pam Brenner that fit this into their schedules and a special thank you to software developer Alagappan Annamalai. Please note this tool is unsupported and provided as-is.
Is this something we should consider adding to the base AutoCAD in the future, let me know in the comments to this post.
Cheers,
Shaan

I think that this should definitely be added to AutoCAD in the form of a service pack for 2010 and earlier with the option to enable/disable it under Tools > Options. This should be included with 2011 and later!
As a CAD Manager right now, I currently have this feature enabled on over 35 CAD workstations.
Just a note to say that flicker based images are being blocked by our corporate firewall/internet restrictions.
Otherwise, thanks for keeping me up to date on AutoCAD matters!
Shaan, love this tool. Everyone I show it to at work wants it. It should definitely be part of base AutoCAD. Thanks for the download link!
JGA,
Thanks for the note on Flickr images being blocked by your IT. It i a tough call to use my posted images that come in larger sizes on Flickr or jut post a static image with no link or location of archived images. Thankfully it is a very small few that are blocked to Flickr. I wonder if I posted the images using an IP address instead of flickr URL if it would bypass the IT filters.
Cheers,
Shaan
Needs to be part of Basic AutoCAD. Make it so 🙂
For the love of all that is good in this world, please add this to AutoCAD, ACA and Revit 2010 !
yes. MDI is becoming a standard in today’s applications. and it helps my ADD
This tab add-on has been an enormous hit at my office for a long time now. It was initially very difficult to actually track down the fabled ARX file for the add-on, so it’s really nice to see it released again through official channels. That being said, why the heck hasn’t this been built into AutoCAD already? I don’t know anyone who hasn’t found the tabs indispensable, and I have never had any problems with the stability or functionality of the tabs.
Yes they should be incorporated into core Autocad & Revit. The only improvement I would to see is the ability to rearrange them like tab’s in a web browser.
Just got a question, because this thing obviously takes up a bit of screen real estate. Especially with only one or two files open it is not so necessary. How do you unload arx files when you don’t need them? There is not autohide.
Also, because I was totally confused installing the 2010 version. Because there is no ‘Window’ menu item, where can you see and select your open files if you don’t have this plugin installed? .. If there is no other way than to CTRL+TAB your way through the files I guess this tab system has to be included. But maybe the open file list is available somewhere in the new 2010 GUI without this MDI tabs???
Eirik,
You can unload the ARX the easiest with the Command ARX and Unload or unload it with APPLOAD. I am not sure what you mean by not being able to see open drawing with the tabs. You can also use QVDRAWING.
Sincerely,
Shaan
If you add this in make sure we can turn it off if we want. I don’t want to lose even more real estate and I don’t find it that useful. With Ribbon off a simple Alt+W will give me a list and I can type the number next to the drawing to switch. Or just Ctrl+Tab if there are only two or three drawings open. And Shift+Ctrl+Tab to go backwards.
Does anyone know how to load this on a lite version, or if it is possible. I too agree it should be part of the base AutoCAD. Every place I do training at I provide this to them and they all love it.
Jeremy,
This is an ARX application an therefore only for full AutoCAD products and not AutoCAD LT.
Sincerely,
Shaan Hurley
A right click on a tab displays a menu with the “open containing folder”. This command does not work for me (AutoCAD 2009 french), it opens always the “My documents” folder.
Have you tried this version?

Kinda new to this site, what App Store?
No worries. It is on the web as well as in the product when the Autodesk Exchange opens.
I just wrote a blog post about the new app.

Very usefull Bonus! Work fine on AutoCAD 2007.
I have a question. Is it possible to do so when you open more drawings than can fit in the tab, the labels can be narrowed as in the windows task bar.
Because I work with multiple drawings at once and when they start to hide the idea of a tab is lost.
Sorry for my English.
