I found your note about AutoCAD R11. I have used this product off and on since about 1990. I have been trying to update some Fortran code that generates longitudonal sections, using a few blocks and a dxf file format. R11 it is simple, 2011 it is a freaking nightmare. 303 lines of code to insert a tree block, come on man this is not good.
I just dragged out an old Intel D845GLAD computer, put up XP, Microsoft refused to activate it, said it had been activated too many times. And great it ran, this computer has LPT1 that recognizes dongle.
R11 is still the best freaking interface for an old salt like me. It is the best version of Autocad for engineers.
it is simple amd lets me do 2d drawing in a snap. Drawings for engineering works are 2d.
I must be the only person in the world still using it.
AUTOCAD should consider old salts and rerelease it for Windows 7.

Thanks for reading the blog and the posting a comment. Yes R11 was a great release but so were many others prior to 2000 such as R12 and R14 in the eyes of many of us longtime veterans. R11 can be ran in compatibility mode in Windows 7 or even a virtual machine but not supported or a replacement for something current. To actually bring AutoCAD R11 to Windows 7 support would actually be a fairly large project like getting like a 1950’s era car to current fuel and auto safety standards.
I actually use AutoCAD 2.18 for fun on a virtual machine with a DOS 20MB partition. So while R11 was awesome it is not modern, compliant with the Operating Systems and drivers of the past 15 years. It is also lacking so many new features that make some drafting tasks a no-brainer compared to the way we did things back in R11. But if R11 satisfies your own needs then keep using it but know that as hardware and Operating Systems update, and you don’t update your applications there could be bumps in the road.
