Project Photofly 2.1 update

Project Photofly 2.1

A Project Photofly 2.1 update has just been released. This update is a minor release update to improve based on feedback and testing since release of 2.0 a month ago.

Project Photofly allows anyone with a common point and shoot digital camera to create near accurate 3D models from photographs using the power of cloud computing, for free. The 3D models can be used in CAD and 3D applications, shared with others through YouTube, and viewed in IPM format by Autodesk’s free Inventor Publisher Mobile Viewer application for the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android devices.

Some of the highlights in 2.1:

  • FBX file export (mesh, cameras, user geometry)  This also means you can use the AutoCAD import FBX to get the mesh into AutoCAD.
  • IPM  exported files now support both iPhone and Android
  • Better network proxy management
  • Proper handling of names containing non-ascii characters
  • More helpful user feedback on failures
  • Optimization of the data downloaded
  • Better use of photos EXIF data
  • Improved manual stitching workflow
  • Multiple-selection of image thumbnails

To install the new Photo Scene Editor if you already have 2.0 installed, when you run the old version you will be prompted to download the new 2.1 version.

If you do not have installed or tried Photofly, why not?

I’d been using verison 2.0 and it was fantastic! I just recently had to upgrade to version 2.1. I’m finding version 2.1 to be extremely buggy to the point that it is unusable. A lot of the time when I try to manually stitch points across multiple images, I get red red ones saying points don’t correspond. When I upload the images for processing, the results that are coming back have camera points from 360 degrees all compressed into a 90 degree angle.
I’ve even tried taking projects that I know worked really well with version 2.0 and keep getting errors with version 2.1. Other times halfway through processing the data, I’ll get error messages with no results.
Is there any way to roll back or not be ‘forced’ to upgrade. I was really happy with version 2.0 but version 2.1 is completely unusable.
Is anyone else having the same problems?

Matt,
We have identified a small bug on the server side that is probably the source of this. We expect to have it fixed, up and running, within a couple days.

Very nice sharing guys keep it up and do more

Android IPM viewer is not working, at least on my device (Droid X, Gingerbread). When I try to open a downloaded IPM file in my DropBox folder, I’m told that there’s no viewer for IPM files. Uninstalling, then reinstalling the IPM viewer doesn’t fix the problem. Tried emailing the IPM file to myself, and GMail says it can’t download the file.

To Leszek Pawlowicz.
I have the same problem with my Android Phone. Did you finally find a solution for that purpose ?
