AutoCAD Tip: How Do I Get the Old Array Version Back

So you like the way the old pre AutoCAD 2012 Array command worked with the dialog. Even though there is more functionality in the new ARRAY version you don’t want to deal with the learning curve or change your ways. I understand as I still type DDARRAY as old habits are hard to break. No problem here is the solution to get the Classic ARRAY back.

AutoCAD ARRAY of OBJECTSThe Autodesk product teams receive several emails from the Autodesk Product Feedback Form. Your feedback goes to the products teams and they read them. In many cases team members respond if there is enough detail and time permitting but they can’t respond to every feedback submission, but do try to help when they can.

This solution on the AutoCAD ARRAY Command is by AutoCAD Test Development’s Daniel Kuhmann.

If you are using AutoCAD 2012, you will need to install service pack 1 or 2 to use the ARRAYCLASSIC command. If you are using AutoCAD 2013 or AutoCAD 2014, you will not have to install a service pack.

  1. The Array tool is one of many new tools that can only be fully implemented through the Ribbon.
Autodesk needs to remember when adding tools/enhancements, they need to provide access to them through the classic menu and dialog box routes as well as the ribbon.
Not everyone uses the ribbon, and these new tools are becoming more and more inaccessible.

  2. Gavin, I think the point Autodesk is slowly making is that we better start using the ribbon. I would like to hear an official comment from them, but I don’t think they are going to support multiple UI elements forever. Look at the screen menu today.

  3. Shaan,
For me it is not a question of wnting to keep old habits. The list of things that I would change in AutoCAD is very long. The new version of the Array command is like many “improvements” that autodesk comes up with. Great in concept, flawed in execution. They really are poor at GUI design. They frequently confuse added features with improved function. An enlarged feature set is great, if it is well implemented. Example, the old dialogue box provided a clean way of setting up the offsets. The “new and improved” version is more powerful yet more cumbersome. That is a frequent problem with AutoCAD.
