One of the simplest and most effective things you can do to maintain a stable, high-performing CAD workstation is to reboot regularly and keep your machine current with IT and hardware updates. AutoCAD, Civil 3D and other CAD applications accumulate memory and system resources over time especially when working with large files – a fresh session each day goes a long way toward preventing crashes and sluggish performance.
Daily Habits That Make a Difference
- Reboot at the end of each workday. A daily restart clears accumulated memory, closes stale file handles, and resets GPU state — all common contributors to AutoCAD & Civil 3D crashes during long sessions.
- Save and close your work before leaving. Make sure all drawings are saved and AutoCAD & Civil 3D is closed so update processes can complete without interference.
- Avoid leaving AutoCAD & Civil 3D open overnight. Extended sessions (3+ hours) are associated with GDI object exhaustion and increased crash risk – overnight sessions compound this significantly.
