AutoCAD’s Top 5 Commands

Autodesk CIP Process

I asked people in Twitter from my Twitter account @mrcadman to take a guess at the top 5 most used commands in AutoCAD are. I received a wide variety of replies, and some were very close to the actual top 5 commands.

I checked the invoked command data reported by hundreds of thousands of AutoCAD users submitting anonymous CIP (Customer Involvement Program) data to Autodesk.

AutoCAD’s Most Used Commands

  1. ERASE
  2. MOVE
  3. LINE
  4. COPY
  5. TRIM

My favorite of all AutoCAD commands comes in at number 6, UNDO.

If you are not submitting CIP data please consider it as it helps Autodesk know how our products are being used for future design improvements to save you time and make a better product.

So, among the top 5 commands just one, command 3 is for creating something.
The top command is meant for remove undesired entities or undo some creation process.
What do this really mean? 🙂

Shaan,
I’m with you. I use UNDO more than I care to admit to!

Fernando,
Great to hear from you. I don’t think anything can be read definitively from this raw command count without further research in context of the work-flow. It was just something fun.
Our research team digs into the commands really deep and how they were involved and what series of commands before and after to get much more actionable results (http://autodesk.blogs.com/between_the_lines/2008/09/autodesk-resear.html).
You can have a look on Autodesk Labs at the CommunityCommands for AutoCAD (http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/acad_community_commands/) for more CIP command statistical usage.
Obrigado,
Shaan

Erase more than line?. . . k… I would use move more than I use erase, but I guess that’s just me.

I still use “oops” 🙂

I love the “oops” command. I often erase something, draw something else then wish I didn’t erase the first object. Perfect for the oops command.
I just wish we could get selective undo and redo like even the most basic programs these days seem to be getting, just select the commands that we want to undo and redo. (A dialog box with a preview of what will happen would be even cooler though). Although I would want this in addition to the drop downs that we have now.
