Couples Portrait Painting Night

A couples portrait painting night was fun. Despite minimal guidance, both of us faced the challenge of capturing each other's likeness. The results were humorous and far from flattering, yet laughter and good company prevailed. They discovered a shared enjoyment in painting, considering future sessions with lower stakes and practicing together.

Couples portrait painting night. “It will be fun”, she said.
And it was. Just not in the way I expected.

We were given very little instruction. Paint your partner. No peeking. Reveal at the end. Simple enough. Except I quickly realized that translating Stef’s actual beauty into paint was well beyond my artistic skill set.

A smiling woman sitting at a table with a blank canvas on an easel, surrounded by art supplies and other people engaged in painting.

She’s my wildflower. My painting made her look more like a distant cousin of a cartoon character. Luckily, she laughed. A lot. She’s a good sport and clearly loves me. I should have stopped after painting her hair on the canvas as it went downhill from there, clearly.

Her painting of me was also honest. Big head. Very serious face. The kind of expression you’d expect on a wanted poster. I deserved it.

All in all, it was a great night. We laughed the whole time. No pressure. No phones. Just paint, bad proportions, and good company.

We both realized we actually like painting together. We might try a watercolor kit at home. Low stakes. More practice. Maybe fewer crimes committed in portrait form.

It turns out being bad at art can still be a pretty solid couples activity!
