The area surrounding Las Vegas Nevada (the location of Autodesk University 2007) has so much to offer for those that like to hike, bike, photograph, and sightsee. The region is a high desert but most people do not realize the desert has more stunning beauty than expected. I personally find the desert far more photographic and alive than say forests, jungle, or beaches. You see the warm red, crisp blues, and vibrant green, texture and shape heaven, as well as the rich and preserved history and Indian rock art. I have fallen head over heels in love with the desert Southwest and spend a fair amount of time hiking and photographing area in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. I will be hiking before and during AU when possible such as sunrise and sunset hikes as those are the most vivid light and the red rock glows. Excellent locations are nearby such as Valley of Fire and Red Rock canyon. There is also the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef , and Zion within a short drive.
I have a current and rare permit for the world famous Wave sandstone formation on Coyote Butte North (my photo gallery of the Wave in July) and have 3 positions available on the permit available if you are interested in joining the hike. There are only 20 people per day allowed into this pristine and mesmerizing region to prevent damage to the environment. The permits are assigned on a lottery system many months in advance or if lucky you can possibly get one for the following day at the Paria Ranger station.
