Project Photofly has now graduated as an Autodesk product and is now named 123D Catch. This is what Autodesk Labs is for in that we place a early technology to get feedback and support whether there is enough demand and promise to make it an Autodesk product.
This annual fun event will be held on the Friday and Saturday following Autodesk University 2011. The event will be for photographers and sightseers to get outside the casinos and into the fresh air and sunshine to photograph the beautiful Southern Nevada landscapes and the unique Las Vegas people and sites.
Just returning from a week long vacation although you may have noticed in social media, the blog, and on email I failed in remaining disconnected during the week long wind down.
Project Photofly is a free early Autodesk Labs technology preview that allows anyone with a digital camera to create 3D models from photographs. Project Photofly is two parts one the cloud computing technology and the second the desktop application named Photo Scene Editor.
I visited South Eastern Utah this spring to capture in photos some of the natural geology like Arches National Park and also some of the amazing archeological sites from the ancient pueblo cultures from about 800-1500 year old.
I took a series of photos using my Nikon D7000 and a point and shoot Panasonic camera. Using the recently released free download of Project Photofly version 2 I was able to convert the photos into a 3D Photo Scene which is a 3D model constructed of 3D point and even a textured 3D mesh. The 3D photo scene was created from 110 photos and took NO manual point selection by me it was automagically converted to a 3D model using mathematical algorithms in Project Photofly.
Two weeks ago I visited the Autodesk San Francisco office and had the pleasure of working with the Project Photofly Photo Booth in the Autodesk Gallery at One Market in San Francisco. This is the same exhibit shown at the recent TED 2011 conference, but now even more cool.
An article by MIT Technology Review today details more background about the upcoming Autodesk Project Photofly version 2 with an interview of Vice president of Autodesk Labs, Brian Mathews. Project Photofly is the free Technology Preview on Autodesk Labs where you can upload photos and they are automatically converted to 3D models.
This week I am capturing several objects in 3D including the world famous Delicate Arch located in Arches National Park in SE Utah. Tomorrow two FARO employees and myself will be hiking up to the Delicate Arch with a 3D laser scanner to capture the Delicate Arch in a 3D point cloud.
We have created a public Flickr group for AU2010 (http://www.flickr.com/groups/au2010/) for sharing photos by Autodesk University 2010 attendees. Flickr is free, and an excellent way to share your experiences at AU with others. The AU Team will also be announcing a video upload location in addition to this photo gallery soon.
