Why CAD Can’t Just Use More Cores aka Multithreaded

Civil 3D and AutoCAD's performance issues primarily stem from predictable sequential math requirements that multithreading disrupts. Unlike parallel tasks like rendering, CAD calculations must remain consistent, as dependencies affect results. Thus, single-core CPU speed is crucial, while more cores benefit background tasks but won't resolve geometry-related delays in CAD operations.

The Browser That Ran Revit (And Why Autodesk Killed It)

In November 2013, Autodesk successfully ran full versions of its applications like Inventor and Revit in web browsers through a partnership with Mozilla, OTOY, AWS, and NVIDIA. Despite the groundbreaking performance, Autodesk chose not to launch the product due to pricing, internal politics, and fear of disrupting existing profits, ultimately opting for limited cloud features instead.

Floating Point, Multi Core, and Why Precision Still Matters

The importance of precision in CAD software like AutoCAD is highlighted, illustrating how floating point limits affect geometry at large scales. While multi-core processing exists, certain tasks must remain single-threaded to ensure accuracy and reliability. AutoCAD balances threading where beneficial, continually addressing tradeoffs between precision and performance for user stability and productivity.

The Future of Manufacturing Technology

In today's fast-paced world, manufacturing is undergoing a major transformation. Driven by technological advancements, shifting market demands, and the push for sustainability, this evolution was evident at the recent IMTS—the world's largest manufacturing technology show with over 100,000 attendees. Attending with some startup clients, I got an up-close look at the technology trends.

Exciting News – I’m Attending IMTS 2024 in Chicago!

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be attending the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) this year in Chicago!

From September 9-14, 2024, McCormick Place will be the epicenter of innovation, and I’m looking forward to diving into the latest advancements in the manufacturing technology space. IMTS is where the magic happens—where ideas come to life, technologies evolve, and the future of manufacturing takes shape.
